If you made it to any of the screenings at the Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) last month, you would have seen the evocative festival promo featuring mysterious giants watching over the Cape skyline. Entitled Legend of the Sun Guardian, this was the winner of the promo competition run by CTIAF, and bagged its creator, Egbert Westra of Akimbo Animation, a handsome cash prize.
The short, scored by Analog Orchestra, shows the evolution of the Mother City from the present day through to a futuristic utopia buzzing with stylish new structures, sustainable energies, light-beaming flying saucers, slick monorails, a Terry Pratchett-inspired giant turtle, and then three gigantic ‘guardians’ who usher in a new wave of animation in South Africa. We caught up with Westra to discover the inspiration behind this intriguing piece of work.
“I think it’s fair to say that we can expect anything from technology and science in the future seeing that it’s progressing so fast,” said Westra. “History repeats itself, so my idea of the turtle submarine and flying saucers was to say that we might expect strange new settlers to come our way in the future.”
The evocative giant figures were inspired by Khoisan cave paintings, as well as the various forms of sun worship revealed through comparative mythology, says Westra. “The idea was to create a vision for the viewer to remember and imagine these gigantic spirit beings when experiencing the powerful weather elements in Cape Town,” he explains. “I wanted to show the futuristic city being powered by these forces through the use of solar panels and wind turbines.”
On the bread-and-butter front, Akimbo recently finished a promo video for SA Idols, and they are currently working with Muti Films on a new channel for DSTV. The company offers a full suite of services from educational videos, infographic animations, Channel Identities, TV show packaging and promos, to character design and animation.
